- Do you support or oppose the Independent Redistricting Commission and Standards Act that Utah voters approved in 2018? Please explain your reasoning.
- I wholeheartedly support Prop 4. In fact, the disgraceful GOP attempts to repeal it are why I decided to run for office. Utah gets terrible fairness scores for our political boundaries. These hyper-partisan boundaries allow the GOP to maintain its supermajority. That has emboldened the legislature to deny the needs and will of the voters.
- What should happen when the legislature disagrees with a map the commission produces, and what would you do in that situation?
- The legislature must follow the law. I will say so. Loudly. I will forcefully defend the judiciary against partisan attacks from the legislature or a political party, such as those we saw during the Prop 4 debacle.
- Do you support Utah's vote-by-mail system as it stands?
- No. The legislature has removed the postmark date grace period and has implemented other rules (such as mandatory re-opting in) to make voting by mail more difficult. I will support changes to reverse those actions, and to make voting by mail as easy as possible while maintaining appropriate security measures.
- What would you do to encourage more people to vote who currently don't vote?
- I think the state should start an aggressive voter advertisement, education, registration, and encouragement program. I also think the voting process should be made as user friendly as possible across the board.
- Utah voters can put questions on the ballot through citizen initiatives and referenda. Should the threshold for passing them be changed? Why or why not?
- Yes. The legislature has actively worked to weaken our Constitutional right to citizen initiatives and referenda for years. They continue to do so with Amendments A, and especially B, this election cycle. We need to simplify the process, within reason, and we need to put up guardrails that prevent the legislature from interfering with the results.
- What do you see as the relationship between transparency and corruption?
- Lack of transparency breeds corruption. It prevents accountability.
- Does Utah's GRAMA support the public's right to know, or does it need strengthening? Or is it too stringent?
- This ties into the transparency question. My general response is the government has a responsibility to be completely transparent in all public matters to the maximum extent possible. The process to request information should be as simple as possible.
- Describe a specific action you would take in office to make sure every person in your district has equal access to government services and equal protection under the law, regardless of citizenship status.
- I am highly skeptical of 287(g) agreements, and for the most part I oppose them. I will take every opportunity to make sure ICE, and all law enforcement agencies, are being held to the strictest standards, and that individuals and organizations are held accountable for their actions.
- Is there anything else you think is relevant that our questions did not reach?
- _(no response)_
