- Do you support or oppose the Independent Redistricting Commission and Standards Act that Utah voters approved in 2018? Please explain your reasoning.
- Yes, I support the IRC & Standards Act approved in 2018. I voted in support of it and I'd do it again. I support it because the supermajority that has been gerrymandered in Utah is not a refection of the will of the people. The people voice matters. The people understand the supermajority is not working in the best interest of Utah.W
- What should happen when the legislature disagrees with a map the commission produces, and what would you do in that situation?
- When the legislature disagrees with the map the commission produces, the legislature needs to respect the independent voice and make their decision based on what the independent commission produces. You can count on me to respect the maps the commission recommends and vote accordingly.
- Do you support Utah's vote-by-mail system as it stands?
- Absolutely!
- What would you do to encourage more people to vote who currently don't vote?
- I believe it begins with a conversation. People don't vote because they don't feel like they understand the issues, are not interested in politics, or, cynically, don't think it matters.
- We need to take every opportunity to speak out and help people understand why it matters.
- Utah voters can put questions on the ballot through citizen initiatives and referenda. Should the threshold for passing them be changed? Why or why not?
- Absolutely not! The current referendum was placed intentionally to limit the voice of the people and plays into an agenda that further ties the hands of local leaders and is subversive to the best interest of the state.
- What do you see as the relationship between transparency and corruption?
- Corruption increases as transparency is limited. It's really that simple. Lack of transparency is the seedbed for corruption.
- Does Utah's GRAMA support the public's right to know, or does it need strengthening? Or is it too stringent?
- GRAMA does support the public's right to know. As a public administrator, I deal with GRAMA requests regularly. Based on experience, it could use some work. Some aspects could use strengthening and in some situations, it's too stringent.
- Describe a specific action you would take in office to make sure every person in your district has equal access to government services and equal protection under the law, regardless of citizenship status.
- This in an issue of education and communication. I would work to ensure that every government agency is doing everything feasible to reach out the people they are responsible to serve and provide the education to those people in a safe and non-threatening environment.
- Is there anything else you think is relevant that our questions did not reach?
- I support the mission of BURRN and will do all in my power as an elected official to move forward your work.
